High or low deductibles?

Should I pay extra for that low deductible on my home or auto?  An age old insurance question. We have an answer.  If, and only if, you can stomach the unexpected payment, always opt for the higher deductible.  Why???    If you call your freshquote advisor and say I’ve got a $4,000 of damage after a pipe burst in my house with a $2,500 deductible, any good advisor will jump through the phone and tell you not to file a claim.  If you do file a claim, you’ll pay for that incremental $1,500 you saved four times over after the rate increases start to come through.  Other carriers can see claims history too so you can’t run from it.  So if that’s the case and you’d never really make a claim at those levels, why pay extra for the low deductible?  You’re only enriching the insurance carriers – best to jack up the deductibles to levels you can stomach and pay less in premiums.
